Play Diablo in Your Browser With Files You Own
One town, one cathedral and a very long descent: Diablo is Blizzard North 1996 action RPG and the game that turned clicking on skeletons into a genre. This page runs DevilutionX, an open source rebuild of the engine compiled to WebAssembly. The shareware demo starts with nothing but the page, and your own copy of the game unlocks the full campaign.

What is Diablo (Web)?
Released in 1996, Diablo dropped players into a single dungeon beneath a single town and let them descend floor by floor. Random layouts, random loot and optional permadeath made every run different, and the pace was slower and more deliberate than the sequels that followed. Tristram's music, Deckard Cain's voice and the Butcher's room are the parts people still quote decades later, and all of them survive the trip to the web.
DevilutionX is a source port maintained by volunteers that reproduces Diablo's engine on modern systems, including the browser through Emscripten and WebAssembly. It is not a hosted copy of the game. Blizzard's art, audio and level data are not part of the project, we host nothing here, and the page cannot supply those assets. You need a legitimate copy of Diablo, and the loader will ask for the data archive before anything renders.
The first minutes are setup rather than gameplay. You select the data archive from your installation, wait while the browser reads it, and land on a main menu with the original introduction. Rendering keeps the isometric view and the 1996 look instead of modernizing it. Mouse control feels close to native, and the window scales to your browser rather than demanding fullscreen.
How to play Diablo (Web) in your browser
- Confirm you own Diablo on Battle.net, disc or another legitimate source.
- Open the DevilutionX web page in a desktop browser.
- Point the loader at the data archive from your installation.
- Wait for the read to finish and the main menu to appear.
- Create a warrior, rogue or sorcerer and enter Tristram.
- Talk to the townsfolk, then take the stairs under the cathedral.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Mouse | Move, target and interact |
| Left click | Walk, attack or pick up loot |
| Shift + click | Attack in place without moving |
| 1 to 4 | Use belt items such as potions |
| I | Open the inventory |
| C | Open the character sheet |
| T | Open the spell book |
| Esc | Open the menu or close a panel |
Controls can differ between builds. Most of these games let you rebind keys from their own settings menu, and you can press Esc to release the mouse pointer.
Tips for Diablo (Web)
- Own Diablo first, since DevilutionX provides the engine and nothing else, and the artwork has to come from somewhere legal.
- Keep the data archive on the machine you play on, so you are not hunting for an old disc every time.
- Hold the attack key instead of clicking repeatedly, because your wrist will notice by the fourth floor.
- Keep healing potions on the belt and drink them with a number key rather than opening the inventory mid fight.
- Clear side rooms on the early floors, since the cathedral rewards anyone willing to sweep for loot.
- Try a smaller window if the frame rate drags, as the isometric renderer stays readable at low resolution.

Diablo (Web) FAQ
Does Diablo work in a browser without owning the game?
The shareware demo does: it starts from the page with a short first download and no purchase. The full campaign needs a data archive from a copy of Diablo you own, and the loader waits until you supply it.
Is the Diablo browser version free to play?
The port itself is free and open source, so neither the project nor this site charges you. You still need the original game, which is sold digitally and turns up on resale sites. Free here means the engine, not the game.
How do I save my progress in Diablo on the web?
DevilutionX supports the standard single player saves, and in a browser those normally sit in the site's local storage. Export or back them up if the option exists, and remember that clearing site data for this domain will remove them.
Can I play Diablo on a phone or a Chromebook?
A phone cannot supply the data archive and has no mouse, and Diablo is built around pointing and clicking, so it is a poor fit. A Chromebook with a mouse and enough memory can work, but a desktop remains the natural home.
Why is Diablo stuck on the loading screen?
The most common reason is a data archive that is incomplete or from the wrong release. Copy the file without interrupting the read, select it again, then refresh the tab. Some browsers handle large local reads better than others, so a second browser is a fair test.
Is this the official Diablo browser port from Blizzard?
It is not. Blizzard has never released Diablo for the web, and this project has no affiliation with the company. DevilutionX is a community source port, and this site only links to it rather than hosting it.
Is it legal to play Diablo in a browser using my own files?
Using a community engine with game data you purchased is widely treated as acceptable, and it mirrors running the game on your own computer. Downloading Diablo from an unofficial source is a different matter, so stay with a copy you own.
