Play Urban Terror in Your Browser

Urban Terror began as a Quake III mod and grew into a free standalone shooter with a devoted following. This browser build runs an ioquake3 based client in WebAssembly, so you can join live tactical matches in a tab with no install and no store purchase.

Reality checkUrban Terror translates well: movement, weapon handling and the tactical pace all survive the browser build, and there are still players to shoot. Older visuals, a modest community and a slow first load are the honest trade offs. Worth a try if you want a free tactical shooter.

What is Urban Terror?

Urban Terror sits between realism and arena shooting. You carry limited ammunition, you take damage quickly, and a headshot usually ends the exchange. Then it hands you wall jumping and a stamina system, so movement stays fast. That combination is why a small community has kept playing it for years.

The browser client is built on ioquake3 and compiled to WebAssembly, which means it inherits the movement and shooting of the original rather than approximating them. You join a server, pick a side, and play team deathmatch or capture the flag with real opponents. Weapon selection happens at spawn and matters.

The engine has to load before you can connect, so the first visit can take a while on a slow connection. Bind your keys early, because the tactical pace punishes fumbling for crouch or weapon switch. Sensitivity matters more here than in an arena shooter, since most duels are decided at range.

Nothing is hosted here. The link goes to the project page, and we have no affiliation with Frozen Sand, the team behind Urban Terror, nor any say over its servers. The game itself has always been a free download, so the browser route skips the installer and the file hunting rather than replacing anything official.

How to play Urban Terror in your browser

  1. Open the project page and let the WebAssembly client finish running its setup
  2. Set your player name and pick a server from the list
  3. Choose a weapon loadout before you spawn into the map
  4. Lock the pointer and adjust sensitivity for mid-range fights
  5. Move with your team and use cover instead of sprinting into the open
  6. Sprint, slide into a crouch, and shoot accurately to win duels
Never install anything to play a browser game. Urban Terror does not need a launcher, an .exe or your account password. If a page asks for any of those, close the tab and play something else.

Tips for Urban Terror

  • Sprint and then crouch to slide into cover, because the slide keeps your momentum while making you a smaller target
  • Fire in short bursts at range, since recoil punishes anyone holding the trigger in a mid-range duel
  • Watch your stamina before a fight, because arriving winded means you cannot reposition when shots start
  • Pick a weapon for the map rather than your mood, as long sight lines and tight streets reward different kits
  • Stay near a teammate with a rifle, because trading fire with someone who can cover your reload wins objectives

Urban Terror FAQ

Is Urban Terror in the browser free?

Yes, and it always has been. The game is a free download from its own team, and this browser client does not charge either. Nothing on this site is for sale, and we only link to the project page.

Can I play Urban Terror online with other people?

Yes, the client connects to live servers, and the community still runs public matches. Population is the variable, so play during evening hours in your region and check the server list before you commit to a session.

Is this the official Urban Terror browser version?

It is a browser client built from the open source ioquake3 engine, which is the same foundation the game uses, but the port itself is a community effort. We are not affiliated with Frozen Sand or the Urban Terror team.

Why is Urban Terror not loading in my browser?

These clients fetch the engine before they show a server list, so a slow connection can make the first load look broken. Refresh once, enable hardware acceleration, and try another browser if the canvas never appears.

Does Urban Terror need a controller or special mouse?

Keyboard and mouse is the intended setup, and no special hardware is required. That said, a mouse with a couple of side buttons makes weapon switching easier, and a trackpad will put you at a disadvantage in every duel.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

It can work on a Chromebook with an external mouse and decent graphics, since the client is light by modern standards. Test the server list first, because a slow machine plus a distant server makes every firefight feel unfair.
